HASC is now the Center of Safety (2024)

The Houston Area Safety Council (HASC) continues to be a steadfast leader in developing innovative and advanced solutions in the areas of training, workforce development, occupational health, technology, meeting space and service. With a new environmentally conscious campus, HASC is dedicated to building the world’s safest and most competent workforce.

About HASC

As an industry-driven, 501(c)3 nonprofit association, HASC was established in 1990 with the intention of creating the ultimate safety solution. HASC now provides services to hundreds of facilities and thousands of contractors globally. With a mission of building safe workplaces by improving the quality and integrity of the workforce, HASC delivers almost 1 million units of training each year.

TRAINING & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

HASC facilitates and delivers hands-on, instructor-led and computer-based training for general safety, personnel development, and company- and site-specific orientations.

Specializing in delivering safety, health and environmental training, HASC offers over 1,500 different standardized and customizable courses as part of an ever-growing library designed to educate employees in a myriad of subjects. With a focus on personal and skills development, HASC is also an accredited NCCER and Pearson VUE assessment center.

The majority of the training courses are computer-based and can be delivered anywhere via the Internet, while others are hands-on, instructor-led and feature scenario-based or task-specific curriculum.

Part of HASC’s initiative to build safe workplaces is the ability to assist companies in taking individualized training to the next level. HASC assists with turning existing training materials into comprehensive, computer-based training modules for virtually any subject. All computer-based courses can be professionally translated into any language and made Web-deliverable, thereby standardizing training worldwide.

To better accommodate the ever-growing need for skilled labor, HASC has created a turnkey workforce development training solution that features hands-on training with a focus on specific tasks and safety components, including power tools, hand tools, welding, electrical, industrial cleaning, personal protective equipment (PPE), competent person training and more. All hands-on skills training is also fully customizable to meet any company- or job-specific need.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

At the request of membership to create a complete solution for pre-employment requirements and work-related medical services, HASC has expanded Occupational Health Services to a full-scale occupational clinic.

In addition to audiograms, pulmonary function (PFT) and respirator fit testing through Global Health, HASC now provides physical exams, functional capacity testing, 24/7 injury care, drug screen collections for multiple providers and consortiums, mobile on-site health service, laboratory testing, vaccinations, travel medicine and electronic medical records.

HASC’s chief medical officer is Board Certified in Occupational Medicine with additional OSHA knowledgeable providers. For additional information, visit www.safetymedicine.com.

SERVICE

HASC is committed to improving the integrity of recordkeeping, as well as the efficiency and reliability of data. Thus, in addition to the already secure network, HASC has located all of its critical servers and therefore all training records and course data to a secure data center off-site, protecting all information from natural and man-made disasters.

Additionally, HASC members have access to the HASC Extranet to take advantage of registering one or multiple trainees online for training or occupational health service, using the most current schedule available 24/7. The Extranet provides a review of current and expired training history, the ability to run reports and the option to “Save Time, Skip the Line” with the HASC e-Routing Card.

TECHNOLOGY

Consortiums

With the Houston Business Roundtable (HBR), HASC launched the revolutionary North American Substance Abuse Program (NASAP) and North American Background Screening Consortium (NABSC) to assist petrochemical plants and refineries with enforcing a safe and substance abuse-free workforce.

As one of the largest substance abuse consortiums in North America, NASAP delivers a consistent, comprehensive and standardized testing protocol applied uniformly to contractors. By utilizing NASAP, a single database managed by HASC and fed by multiple providers, substance abuse status will follow employees as they change employers and worksites while maintaining the confidentiality of test results. For additional information, visit www.hasap.com.

Modeled after the wildly successful NASAP, NABSC facilitates a standardized screening package that will allow entry into multiple owner sites with the use of only one background screen, thus reducing costs. HASC created a database program that links the background screening providers to allow owner companies the ability to manage site-security access requirements while still maintaining the confidentiality of the search results. For additional information, visit www.nabsc.com.

GateCheck

With HASC’s browser-based GateCheck application, owners can quickly verify specific site entry requirements are met before contractor employees cross the gate. GateCheck empowers owners with accurate information, enabling them to check for proper credentials, including current training completed at HASC and other linked safety councils, as well as compliance with programs such as NASAP and NABSC.

PQF

Realizing both contractors and owners need a simple and concise system for evaluating companies, HASC has developed an industry solution in the Contractor Prequalification Database (PQF). This standardized Web-based form is used throughout the industry to provide a thorough description of contractor services and qualifications, allowing owners to easily use the information to determine if contractors meet the requirements for jobs at a specific site.

NEW CAMPUS

HASC continues to make investments in the future of safety training and service through its expansion into a new, state-of-the-art campus.
