Check your HMSA membership card to see if you have dental or drug coverage with HMSA. If the word Dental or Drug with a code isn't listed, you might have coverage with another insurer. Please check with your employer or employee organization.

You cancel your plan before the enrollment deadline . To receive a refund, please submit a letter requesting your cancellation and refund. You withdraw from school. If you withdraw from school, you'll no longer be covered by this plan and your claims won't be paid.

HMSA offers you different options when receiving care on the Mainland. Depending on your medical plan, you can receive services such as emergency and urgent care, or see a physician for a covered benefit. Always carry your HMSA membership card.

PPO (preferred provider organization)

PPO plans let you see any provider you prefer in HMSA's network of participating providers . You can also see nonparticipating providers , but they may charge more than participating providers.

HMSA members have access to the largest health provider network in Hawaii and more than 500,000 preferred Blue Cross and Blue Shield providers nationwide and across the globe. You can still get your prescriptions filled while traveling on the Mainland. Log in to My Account and select Find a Pharmacy for help.

PPO members have convenient access to health care through a large statewide network. Though PPO plans offer you greater choice of doctors than Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans, we encourage you to choose HMSA participating providers to help keep your out-of-pocket expenses down.

Preferred Provider Plan - A medical plan that combines the benefits of basic medical coverage and comprehensive major medical coverage in a single plan.

HMOs don't offer coverage for care from out-of-network healthcare providers. The only exception is for true medical emergencies. With a PPO, you have the flexibility to visit providers outside of your network. However, visiting an out-of-network provider will include a higher fee and a separate deductible.
