  • Factors Affecting Walking Time

The average time it takes to walk a mile is about 20 minutes at an easy pace. If you're an American, you probably think in miles when it comes to walking distances, since the United States is one of the only countries that still use miles instead of kilometers.

But most walking routes and runs are clocked in kilometers. How long does it take to run or walk 1.5 miles, 5 miles or a full marathon? Use these charts to calculate your time and distance in miles and kilometers.

Conversion Tools

To convert your walking distance in miles to kilometers, you can do some simple math using these equations:

  • 1 mile equals 1.6 kilometers: miles x 1.6 = kilometers
  • 1 kilometer equals 0.62 miles: kilometers x 0.62 = miles

You can also look up your distance on the charts below, ranging from aquarter-mile to the marathon distance of 26.2. Or you can use this pace calculator.

How Long It Takes to Walk a Mile

There are plenty of apps and gadgets that can help you to determine your pace and distance. You can also use these charts to figure out how long it might take you to walk different distances based on your pace category.

Your actual pace in these categories will depend on your gender, weight, and other factors. These are generalizations.

  • Easy walk pace: 20 minutes per mile or 12.5 minutes per kilometer
  • Moderate walk pace: 15 minutes per mile or 9.4 minutes per kilometer. This is a healthy brisk walking pace.
  • Fast walk pace: 11 minutes per mile or 7 minutes per kilometer. This is the speed of a fast walk or an easy run.

How Long It Takes to Walk 3 Miles or Less

Factors Affecting Walking Time

Several factors can affect your walking time. First, if you are walking solely for enjoyment and light exercise, you may not push yourself to walk faster. So, purpose and intent affect walking time.

You will typically walk faster than usual when participating in an event or competition. An easy pace will mean you may fall to the back of the group, while at a fast pace, you may be up with some of the run/walkers or other fast-paced walkers.

Aside from intent, physical factors including height, weight, fitness level, and body composition, and environmental factors such as incline (hills), weather, and ground surface (smooth or rough) can all affect walking time.
